When the grid gets large and the canvas remains small, it might be useful to provide a zoom mode which can be engaged (mousewheel?) and then renders/shows just a small part of the overall canvas which can be pan-ed and zoomed.

Perhaps meanwhile a minimap can give a glimpse into the overall state of the canvas.
